RMF Engineering Steam Plant Project Wins 2015 Triangle CREW Champion Award

Project ends Duke University’s 80-year dependence on coal, shrinks carbon footprint by 12%

Baltimore, Md. – RMF Engineering announced today that the firm’s Duke University West Campus Steam Plant renewal and conversion project was honored at the 2015 Triangle CREW Champion Awards on April 22 in the “Green or Sustainability” category. The goals of the project were to end the university’s 80-year dependence on coal and reduce its carbon footprint. Upon completion of the project, RMF successfully eliminated on-campus coal usage and reduced the school’s carbon footprint by 12%.

RMF renovated Duke University’s 33,000-square-foot boiler house, replaced aging coal boilers with modern gas-oil fired units and provided major upgrades to all site and plant systems. RMF also used 3D building information modeling (BIM) to help the university better optimize the plant site. Parking areas were improved to allow for better fuel and delivery truck access, more reliable underground utilities were developed and a green-forested landscape was designed to make the site more aesthetically pleasing.

Completed in July 2014, this $35M project has been awarded LEED Silver status by the U.S. Green Building Council, the “Award of Merit for Renovation / Restoration” by ENR Southeast’s 2014 Best Project Awards, and an “Excellence in Construction Merit Award” from the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas.

The West Campus Steam Plant project was completed in collaboration with Lend Lease and Flad Architects.
