Baltimore, Md. – RMF Engineering announced today that the CFA global headquarters conversion project of the former Martha Jefferson Hospital site recently won a Greater Virginia Green Building Council (GVGBC) Leadership Award for Best Commercial Project. The awards are organized each year to “recognize those who demonstrate leadership toward creating sustainable, energy efficient, healthy places to live, learn and work.” RMF Engineering provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) and fire protection services for the project.
The goal of the project was to update the HVAC, fire protection, plumbing and electrical systems of the former Martha Jefferson Hospital South while achieving LEED gold certification. RMF was also challenged with maintaining historical content of the 1920s-era Patterson wing, the property’s tallest structure, by keeping the structure’s original walls and windows in place.
In addition to preserving historical elements of the building, the adaptive facility features solar panels, a graywater reuse system that will reduce CFA’s use of public water by 70 percent, and other various high efficiency systems that will allow the property to operate using 22 percent less energy than similar sized offices.
The design of the $37 million renovation project began in the summer of 2010 and construction was completed in January 2014. Other companies who contributed to the completion of the project include the owner, Charlottesville Operations Hub; the owner’s representative, CBRE; and the architect, Baskervill.
