Baltimore, Md. – RMF Engineering announced today that the firm recently completed work on two milestone projects for the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus expansion: the renovation of the campus’ North Tower Building; and the replacement tower for Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital, which houses Northern Virginia’s only pediatric tertiary care center. RMF provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering services for both buildings, marking the completion of nearly ten years of technical services to achieve successful conclusion of the projects.
“Inova’s campus expansion is a shining example of a hospital’s commitment to progressive healthcare in order to meet the needs of its growing community,” said Duane Pinnix, president of RMF Engineering. “These state-of-the art facilities will benefit the patient population of northern Virginia for decades to come and we’re very proud of all the work we’ve been able to perform with Inova over the last 23 years.”
The North Tower Building project was a renovation of the hospital’s 225,000-square-foot, 11-story patient tower that provides intensive care, acute care and general care patient suites. RMF updated the HVAC and plumbing systems within the facility, installed a new electrical distribution system as well as all related distribution utilities. Primary goals included converting the tower’s semi-private patient rooms into all private rooms and replacing the aging infrastructure with state-of-the-art systems. The renovation was completed in multiple phases so that select floors could remain occupied allowing Inova Fairfax Hospital to continue to serve patients.
The replacement tower for the Women’s and Children’s hospitals is projected to achieve LEED Silver certification. Engineering systems were evaluated by RMF to reduce traditional hospital operating costs and incorporate green building design features. RMF designed a new campus utility plant to serve the new facility as well as complement existing infrastructure. Engineering systems were designed with long term flexibility in mind, allowing for rapid conversion of clinical areas to support changing healthcare needs. Sustainability features include numerous variable-speed technologies, heat recovery, unoccupied reset strategies and green roofs. To support the projected growth of the community, the expansive 660,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility consists of a 12-story patient tower, which adds 310 beds, 33 labor and delivery suites, and specialty operating rooms to the medical campus. Nine floors of the tower are dedicated to a cutting-edge women’s center and three floors are dedicated to the award-winning Children’s Hospital.
Completion of the entire campus expansion project totaled approximately $850 million.
