RMF Engineering Through the Years

1983

• RMF founded as 3 employees, sets up office on St. Paul Street, Baltimore, Maryland.
• Begin with design / build work focusing on multi-story office buildings to warehouses and commercial facilities.
• Awarded our first project with The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This is our first Hospital client and the beginning of our long standing relationship with The Hopkins system.

1984-1991

• RMF expands and moves to Briscoe Street, Baltimore, Maryland.
• RMF receives our first project with Dover Air Force Base. This is our first Department of Defense (DOD) work order.
• RMF Grows from 3 employees to 50.
• RMF is hired to complete the campus utility master plan for The Johns Hopkins Medical System.
• Multiple indefinite quantity contracts awarded from The Federal Government due to experience base of the RMF ownership group.
• Our initial healthcare resume is established and begins to flourish.
• Civil / structural added to support RMF’s prime engineering contracts.
• Market regions expand nationwide.
• RMF’s commissioning services started with DOD projects and with ASHRAE commissioning of The Ingress Processing Facility at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.

1988

• RMF expands and moves to West Ostend Street, Baltimore, Maryland.
• Awarded our first project with National Institutes of Health. This identified RMF up as a major player in high-end engineering services.

1992

• Awarded our first project with INOVA Health System. This marks the start of the longest continuous healthcare relationship in our history.
• Awarded several healthcare projects in Pennsylvania. This marks our branching out of Maryland with healthcare work.

1993

• RMF is now growing with high-end contracts on a consistent basis.
• Awarded a significant joint venture project with Applegate Architects. This marks the beginning of the North Carolina office.

1994-1996

• RMF grows from 50 to 120 employees.
• Much of our growth at this point is attributed to RMF’s dedicated infrastructure design and planning group, which few firms had at the time.
• RMF wins Raven’s Stadium project, now called M&T Bank Stadium.
• RMF becomes consumed with NIH work and other major contracts including Hospital and DOD work.
• We expand to nationwide coverage with Higher Education work.
• Higher Education market takes root in North Carolina with projects at UNC, NC State, and DUKE.
• We are awarded a project with Stanford University. This marks our first project on the west coast.

1997

• RMF opens an office in Durham, North Carolina.
• RMF awarded its first project with the USDA, a significant relationship for the firm that has continued until present day.

1998

• RMF wins Pittsburgh Steelers Stadium, now called Acrisure Stadium.
• Second generation took responsibility for leadership of RMF, led by Duane Pinnix.

1999-2002

• Awarded our first project with The Architect of The Capitol. This is a major milestone for the firm.
• RMF opens an office in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Our second branch office is established.
• Awarded our first project with University of South Carolina.

2003

• RMF grows from 120-180 employees.
• RMF opens an office in Albany, New York. Third office established, allows RMF to grow into the northeast region.

2005

• RMF receives our first international project with the Medical Research Council in London, England. The MRC discovered and contacted RMF after visiting the United States and touring several buildings engineered by RMF.

2007

• Awarded our first project with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

2008

• Department of State contract yields worldwide commissioning services for RMF.
• Awarded our first project with New York Presbyterian Hospital, the largest Healthcare redevelopment project to be performed in US history.

2009

• RMF moves out of Baltimore City to the County to a new state-of-the art LEED Certified building on the campus of University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

2010

• RMF’s significant amount of work with The Ohio State University facilitates an office being established in Columbus, Ohio.

2011

• RMF wins nine awards for its $26 million restoration project transforming Duke University’s East Campus into a state-of-the-art, natural gas-fueled steam plant.
• RMF opens a full-service office in Atlanta, Georgia with plans to augment staff and capabilities in the area.

2012

• RMF launches its Leadership Development Program, a two-year training program aimed at preparing our internal talent to grow, think outside of the box and one day, successfully manage the firm.
• RMF opens office in York, Pennsylvania to facilitate expanding growth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
• RMF is selected as a PSMJ’s Circle of Excellence winner.
• RMF is ranked in the top 25 of Building Design + Construction Magazine’s annual Giants 300 list, among the nation’s top firms.

2013

• RMF launches a five-week MEP systems training program in Central Africa for facilities maintenance staff. RMF was selected for the opportunity because of our international work and expertise with complex engineering systems.
• RMF opens a full-service office in Charlotte, North Carolina dedicated to offering highly localized MEP services for higher education, healthcare and government projects.

2016

• RMF is selected as a PSMJ Circle of Excellence winner.

2017

• RMF moves its Delaware office to Salisbury, Maryland in order to better serve the firm’s growing clientele in the Delmarva area.
• RMF is selected as a PSMJ Circle of Excellence winner for second year in a row.
• RMF opens office in Boston, MA to better serve the firm’s New England clients.

2018

• RMF opens its twelfth office in Sarasota, Florida to support the firm’s growth in the southeast region.
• RMF implements a leadership transition and appoints Ken Pitz as President and CEO.
• RMF celebrates its 35th anniversary.
• RMF is selected as a PSMJ Circle of Excellence winner for third year in a row.
