Overview
As a first step towards renewing Stony Brook University’s 50 year old utility infrastructure, RMF surveyed, visually assessed, and documented over 4,000 electrical, hot water, sanitary and stormwater manhole structures. From the assessment, it was determined that the entire electrical feeder system was in need of replacement. RMF provided the design of the twelve new 13.8kV transmission feeders including 63,000 LF of new 4 to 24 way ductbanks, vaults, and cabling. Two guided auger bores were required to traverse a county road that bisects the campus to avoid road interruption. A new satellite distribution substation was designed to provide additional reliability and flexibility to the east side of the campus and the medical center facilities.
The chilled water system was also upgraded to provide cooling for the expanding campus. The design incorporated an 8,000 SF plant expansion housing three 2,500 ton chillers. Additionally, six new field erected 2,250 ton cooling tower cells were provided to increase the plant’s reliability.
