Green Building of America Chooses RMF

Goucher Athenaeum Wins Project of the Decade

RMF Engineering has been awarded Project of the Decade by Green Building of America. Green Building of America Network is a compilation of the nation’s most important and unique new construction and renovation projects, and the companies responsible for their planning, design, engineering, construction and finishes.  Editors, publishers and consultants evaluated each submitted project and publicize the projects and teams that showed innovation, unique solutions to challenges and the ability to reach new heights in their respective market sectors.

This award recognizes RMF’s ability to accomplish an Owner’s goal by taking advantage of the most current technology and software systems to design a superior building. The building has achieved LEED Gold Certification through the USGBC. Energy conservation features include highly efficient mechanical systems, enthalpy recovery wheel module for all ventilation requirements, supplemental solar water heating, day light harvesting, light-activated motorized window shades, insulated glass, and motion sensors for control of lighting, radiant ceiling perimeter heat and displacement ventilation. Other features include motion activated solar powered faucets, waterless urinals, water efficient landscaping and a rain garden to minimize storm water runoff. RMF utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) to layout mechanical and electrical systems in 3D, which resulted in increased coordination between disciplines throughout the design process. This, paired with options analysis, collision detection/avoidance and enhanced visualization methods, helped to reduce conflicts, leading to fewer changes and a better overall design.

“The Athenaeum was designed with environmentally sustainable building practices from start to finish, in every discipline,” said Stefan Domby, RMF’s Project Manager on the project. “Few colleges anywhere have anything like it; it is a high tech library, with digital classrooms, 24/7 student café, an art gallery, a tiered forum area for students to meet and converse; all in one building.” The students have truly embraced this green energy efficient building as the place to be on campus.

About Green Building of America
The Building of America Network allows all decision makers that will soon begin a new construction or renovation project the ability to see and review the best projects within a specific region and industry, and learn about the companies that were responsible for the success. This helps the decision makers limit their liability and save valuable dollars by knowing exactly which companies have the experience, qualifications and reliability on other award-winning projects. It offers a free search engine of beautiful case studies from the top projects in a region, and another free search engine to learn additional information about the companies behind their success.
