Overview

The new two-story, 38,000 SF Charleston County Consolidated 911 Center houses the new Public Safety Communications Department for Charleston County. The facility provides the County means to consolidate ten emergency dispatch operations into one operation, serving multiple jurisdictions and response agencies throughout Charleston County.

The facility serves as an area of refuge during man-made and natural disasters. Additionally, along with enhancing interoperability for this region, the 911 Center is an information sharing hub, with connectivity to many local, state and federal agencies.

The building includes a dispatch area, administrative offices, technology specialist offices, clerical and reception office space, radio/recording/CAD/9-1-1 technology equipment rooms, records and inventory storage space, locker room, bathroom/shower facilities, kitchen, break room, training area and a multi-purpose classroom/conference room. Future expansion capability was included in the design.

Engineering Highlights:

  • The facility has achieved USGBC LEED Gold Certification
  • 23% Energy savings were achieved over similar facilities with traditional systems
  • Elevated to be resilient to the 500 year flood level
  • Backup electricity, water and sewer services to ensure continuous operation during disasters
  • Ability to withstand winds of 191 mph and resist earthquake forces
