Like the steam generation systems they house, old boiler plants are always expanding. The Central Utility Plant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is no exception. The original masonry and steel structure built in 1916 has had several large additions over the years to meet the energy demands of its growing campus in Cambridge, Mass. Land is obviously at a premium in this urban setting, so RMF was tasked with finding an alternative way to make space for much needed water conditioning equipment improvements for the boilers.
