Inova Mount Vernon Hospital OR and Tower C Expansion

The Inova Mount Vernon Hospital OR and Tower C project consisted of a 63,800 SF expansion to the existing hospital. This included a 13,250 SF surgery expansion and a 50,550 SF patient tower expansion. The patient tower consisted of three additional floors and a mechanical penthouse. Part of the surgery expansion and one floor of the patient tower expansion were designed as shell spaces for future growth of the hospital.

The new HVAC systems is a constant air volume (CAV) air handling unit system. Air handling units serving the patient tower were provided with energy recovery wheel to help optimize energy efficiency. Additionally, they were sized for the future fit out of the third-floor shell space. The surgery expansion was provided with a dedicated CAV air handling unit, and a new digital control system was installed that is compatible with the existing hospital system.

The operating room HVAC design presented a unique challenge of designing to maintain space conditions of 58°F/55% relative humidity. To achieve these conditions, a special dehumidification unit was provided to dry out the air being delivered to the operating rooms. During the renovation, the rest of the hospital was kept fully operational.
